2026 Scholarship Opportunity

The New Haven Pearls of Excellence Foundation with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Theta Epsilon Omega Chapter, is offering a four-year scholarship totaling $6,000, at minimum, to a graduating senior in the top third of their class. The applicant must verify their acceptance to and attendance at an accredited post-secondary school or college. The applicant must reside in the Greater New Haven area. See the scholarship application for a list of qualifying towns. Students applying must e-mail a completed application and required documents by March 20, 2026.

MLK Day Food Drive Puts Community First

Liam Billups, 7, joined his sisters and parents in carefully opening a reusable food bag to fill with mac and cheese, cereal, green beans, and boxes of pasta — as he helped put together one of 500 donations meant to carry forward Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy of service and unity.

That was the scene at Wexler-Grant School Monday as over 100 New Haveners joined to celebrate the decades-long tradition of the MLK Day of Service hosted by the Theta Epsilon Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.

“Mind/Matter: The Neuroscience of Perception, Attention, and Memory,” an exhibition at the Yale Peabody Museum, explores the wonders of human cognition by taking visitors on a journey through the historical and modern science of the brain. Visitors will learn how the brain is studied, what it is made of, how it builds our reality, and how discoveries about it are transforming our lives. The exhibit is on display at the Yale Peabody Museum through the end of the 2025 year.

Black History Month: Sickle cell disease research underway at Yale

News 8 is once again honoring Black history by looking at health care and the racial disparities many report facing.

According to the Pew Research Center, overall, 18% of Black adults report poor health, and Black Americans have higher rates of death from cancer and higher maternal mortality rates for both women and infants.

A majority of Black Americans say they’ve had at least one negative interaction with a health care provider, like pain not being taken seriously, being rushed through treatment, or needing to speak up to get the proper care.

Black Fraternities, Sororities Give Back for MLK Day

More than 200 volunteers from 23 different African-American led fraternities, sororities, and civic and service organizations gathered for a ​“We Are One” day of service in honor of Martin Luther King Day.

The event took place Monday morning at the Wexler-Grant Community School on Foote Street in the Dixwell neighborhood.

The service consisted of collecting and packing 300 bags of groceries, which were then delivered a short distance down Dixwell Avenue to the Women of the Village Community Food Pantry, at the Charles Street police substation, to be distributed to families in need beginning tomorrow.

New York Skyline Shines with ΑΚΑ Pink & Green on Sorority’s Founders’ Day

North Atlantic Regional Director Elicia Pegues Spearman, Esq. shared with Black Westchester, that in celebration of the 116th Founders’ Day of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® (AKA), on January 15, 2024, the sorority’s colors of pink and green lit up One World Trade Center and the New York City skyline. New York is located in AKA’s North Atlantic Region and is led by Spearman of New Haven, CT. She joined New York City Mayor Eric Adams, Adrienne E. Adams, Speaker of the New York City Council, and Melvin Norris, Director of Government Affairs of The Durst Organization, which developed One World Trade Center with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, at the skyscraper lighting.
